[Bug 1339036] [NEW] installation stage has no progress info and no apparent activity

Public bug reported:

I booted from the ISO in an ntfs partition and ran the installer. I
already had the partition table set up and so didn't make any changes,
but ubiquity complained it was unable to rewrite the partition table
(/isodevice can't be unmounted because it contains the ISO) but let me
continue anyway.

After filling in the forms and starting the install, it's now showing
the 'Welcome to Ubuntu 14.04' slideshow, complete with scrolling; but
there's no progress bar, message or terminal below, and htop doesn't
show any installation activities happening.
