Ok.  The job status shows that lightdm is running, and the plymouth jobs
are stopped, which looks correct.  So if lightdm is not displaying,
that's most likely a lightdm bug; reassigning.

  System fails to boot to greeter screen

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  This bug report may be related/associated with Bug #1268113, which I
  have also opened, as I only ever see this problem immediately after
  that problem has occurred. So, after my laptop has hung with the
  problem described in bug #1268113, I am forced to power-cycle my
  laptop. Occasionally (but not always) on that first power-on after
  hitting that problem, I experience *this* problem, where the laptop
  fails to boot to the greeter screen.

  Text consoles (CTL-ALT-F1 etc) are available, and my system is
  apparently up and running, but the graphical console (CTL-ALT-F7)
  remains black, and never gets as far as the greeter screen.

  I ran apport-bug to collect this information in the hope that it may
  be useful.  I have guessed plymouth as the problem package, but feel
  free to redirect me as appropriate.
