@psusi what ever Ubuntu Installer Live CD/USB uses in the background.
the disk is in GPT with two partitions and lots of empty space.

will try /dev/sda. i tried that too before and it failed. just a sec!

  can't mount /boot on XFS anymore

Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  until the past week, 14.04 was working fine on this system, with a single partition (for /(root) /boot & /home) mounted on XFS.
  since then, it broke, and GRUB cant boot from it anymore!

  I tried to reinstall grub, run grub-install, with no sucess
