Alexander Sack, thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Gutsy reached EOL on April 18th, 2009.

Title:
no X after install - install failed to install nvidia-glx

Status in ubiquity package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: ubiquity

live session test - Edubuntu Desktop i386 (20071016):

tried to enable desktop effects in live session _before_ install.
restricted-manager automatically downloaded nvidia driver and I was
asked to reboot - which I didn't do.

Then, when booting into the fresh install X is broken and doesn't
start. Installing nvidia-glx manually fixes this.
