Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS was installed on USB-Disk labeled /dev/sdb1 with GRUB
installed in partition 1. Boot flag on partition 1 was set. While
booting GRUB sees this as (hd0,msdos1).

After upgrade to 14.04 via update-manager GRUB no longer boots. Error
message is 'file not found' and grub-rescue prompt is shown.

For repair
1) I booted Grub-Repair-Disk from CD
2) and wrote GRUB to MBR of USB-Disk. This enabled boot to upgraded system 14.04 on /dev/sdb1.
3) Then I ran dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc.

Everything looks fine now, except:
Now I get bug 1311247 when booting this partition which wasn't so before upgrade.
