Same bug still in 14.04 LTS.. I installed ubuntu 13.10 on a brand new
laptop, and, silly me, I checked the LVM option.

Now, when trying to install 14.04 on top of 13.10 (I did an online "live
upgrade" from 13.10 to 14.04 but it broke my installation), the only
option I have, is to wipe out the entire disk.

.. that is because the 14.04 installer does not recognize LVM .. it says
that my laptop "has no detected OS"..!

Maybe the best option would be to remove the LVM possibility completely
from the installer .. or give adequate warnings, like "choosing this
option makes upgrading to a new ubuntu version impossible".

Title:
manual ("something else") live cd partitioner doesn't understand lvm
  properly

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: ubiquity

  1. Start ubquity
  2. Go to step 6 of 7 ('Prepare disk space')
  3. Choose 'manually edit partition table' and click 'forward'

  Expected result:
Physical disks, and lvm vg's are treated as being conceptually
the same. Ditto partitions and lvm lv's.

  Actual result:
lvm lv's are treated as being physical disks.

The lvm lv's appear in the drop-down list of disks. Selecting one
shows a fake partition in the partition list, the name of which is the
path of the lv with a 1 appended. There is a warning sign beside the
  entry.

On the page where you choose what partition is mounted where, the lvm
lv's are completely absent from the drop-down lists.

This has been tested on dapper live beta1, dapper live beta2, and
on an installed dapper system uptodate as of today (2006/05/07).
