This affects me, too, and I've been unable to fix the problem.
I tried pureblood's #27 strategy and _tried_ using dpkg-recongifure
grub-pc but even doing this with what I think are all my partitions it
doesn't work.
I did set it up top dual boot into Windows 8 and Ubuntu 13.10. After
update to 14.04 machine is now unusable, giving the "symbol
'grub_term_highlight_color' not found" error and going to "grub rescue."
Having no idea what to report or do here, I'll ape what others did:

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Title:
Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in "error: symbol
'grub_term_highlight_color' not found"
Status in Ubuntu Release Upgrader:
New
Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
The update from 13.10 to 14.04 via update-manager broke grub for me,
which resulted in the grub error:
"symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found"

To fix the problem I had to boot to my persisting Ubuntu installation
(e.g. using Super Grub Disk) and had to reinstall grub on my boot
partition: "sudo grub-install --recheck /dev/sdx"
