Title:
  Installer crashed

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: ubiquity

I was trying to install Ubuntu 11.04 on an HP laptop with no operating
system (not one that I could access, anyway) and I got pretty far
through the installation process when the installer crashed. I was on
the screen that said "Welcome to Ubuntu 11.04" and has arrows on
either side allowing me to see the features of it. At the bottom of
this dialog was the progress bar which said "Removing extra packages"
and is a less than half way along.

I got a dialog saying "We're sorry; the installer crashed. Please file
  a new bug report at
  http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+filbug (do not attach
your details toa ny existing bug) and a developer will attend to the
  problem as soon as possible."

It also says to include this: "To help the developers understand what
went wrong, include the following detail in your bug report, and
attach the files /var/log/syslog and var/log/partman:"

The package is Ubiquity. That's all I can find out. It appears there
are some other serious issues with my download as well, because when I
run Ubuntu from the disk to try and find further information I'm
repeatedly getting a "Sorry, but Ubuntu Software Center clothes
unexpectedly" message in addition to some others.

  1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System -> About Ubuntu
  I can't access this.

  2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy pkgname' or by checking in Software Center
I got the above mentioned error message when I tried to reach the software center. When I tried to subsequently report that problem (as it gave me the option to do) I got ANOTHER message saying "Invalid Problem Report: could not determine the package or source package name"

  3) What you expected to happen
Well... originally I expected Ubuntu to install on my computer successfully; I had downloaded the .iso file correctly and got it to burn onto a CD correctly as well, so as far as I know I have all the things I need.

  4) What happened instead
The installer crashed and all kinds of other problems occur when I try to find the information needed to submit this.

I don't know what is meant by 'attaching the files to my bug.' This
is my first time trying to install Ubuntu and I only used it for a
very brief period of time without installing it about two years ago,
so I'm not familiar with it at all. I've tried to look up how to find
the release version and such (I don't know what "via 'lsb_release -rd'
means, I'm assuming I have to type that in somewhere, but where is
beyond me and so far other Ubuntu users seem to assume that anyone
using Ubuntu already knows this stuff).

This is literally ALL of the information I can gather from this, and
I'm sorry if it's insufficient but I really hope that someone will
understand it and be able to walk me through the process. I have been
trying to restore this computer for months with no luck when I
remembered that Ubuntu exists and thought it would be perfect.
Download and burned everything correctly and now this won't work
  either. I'm extremely frustrated.
