I tried the install again with the option to download updates while
installing deselected (I had selected this option on my first attempt
when the installer failed and I reported this bug.).  It installed fine
this time.

Bug description:
  I am new to ubuntu.  I was trying to install Lubuntu on an older pc,
  pentium 4, 512 meg memory.  I burned an iso on CD from the downloaded
  file lubuntu-12.04-desktop-i386.iso.  After about 10 or 15 minutes, it
  reported that the installer had crashed.
