Reviewing the files from your upgrade attempt you seem to have enabled
the xorg-edgers-ppa. This will prevent the upgrade as that PPA contains
different versions of packages essential to Ubuntu. The page,
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa, contains details on to
how to revert to the official Xorg packages.

Title:
  unable update 13.10 to 14.40

Status in “ubuntu-release-upgrader” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
I keep being unable to update my Ubuntu 13.10 to 14.10.
At first it was giving me errors about packages that "had no cache" (an example of this was a package named "zsnes", which I removed, afterwards the error didn't show up again), but now it hangs on "Calculating changes..." in the Distribution Update screen with the message:

  "Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

   This can be caused by:
   * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
   * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
   * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command
  'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal."

In advance to upgrading I had already disabled my xorg-edges PPA since that would cause trouble according to some.
Also note: Between "Preparing for upgrade..." and "Setting new software channels..." it gives me a notice saying:

  "Third party sources disabled

Some third party entries in your sources.list were disabled. You can
re-enable them after the upgrade with the 'software-properties' tool
  or your package manager."

I'm unsure whether this is relevant or not but it might have something
  to do with it.
