Don't know if my hardware is shown anywhere . Compaq presario s 6010AN
about 10 years old . Is running very well with ubuntu except above . I'm
not a very technical user and struggled to follow and implement some of
the suggestions i read re the above problem , so I'm needing a simple
step by step ( including the use of terminal and code entry ) if the
problem is something that I can fix this end thanks .

Title:
Shutdown , logout not working, fan running all the time

Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Just switched from XP to Ubuntu . The fan is now running all the time .The computer wont go into standby anymore.
When selecting shutdown the screen ends up blank with the computer still running along with the fan.
Selecting log out to change users creates the same situation as above ie left without the screen and computer still running .
In all the above I then have to use the power button on the computer to close down and restart as the keyboard does nothing.
Selecting restart from unity does work , so I'm lost as to what is going on , and don't want to continue to have to shutdown using the power button , cos with the fan running all the time I'm not sure if the hard drive is still running .
