Plymouth version should have been the same; I'm running a bone-stock
Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit that was upgraded from OEM Ubuntu 11.10 about a week
after 12.04 came out. The only thing I've done other than perform
updates is to add applications; no system modifications other than to
modify /etc/init/lightdm.conf and adding "respawn" like this:

...
stop on runlevel [016]

respawn # <-- add this line

emits login-session-start
emits desktop-session-start
emits desktop-shutdown
...

as suggested in

to fix the lightdm 'failure to start' bug.

  I expected Plymouth to display 'splash screen' at normal resolution.

  Prior to updates, Plymouth seemed to behave properly. Since updates
  last week, Plymouth display appears to be VESA quality rather than
  using NVIDIA driver. Messages appear on-screen both during boot before
  Plymouth, and during shutdown after Plymouth exits. Last similar bug
  report I could find was for 10.04 and was triaged as 'Will not fix'.
