I'm having similar issue on my WD disk
--------------------------
hddtemp /dev/sda
/dev/sda: WDC WD3200BEKT-60V5T1: 55°C
--------------------------
The temperature in Ubuntu varies between 51°C to 55°C when power supply is ON to laptop. The temperature decreases to 44°C while running on battery. The bug is present on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, 13.04 and 13.10 Ubuntu, Kubuntu versions. Surprisingly the bug is still present after so many years!
On the same laptop Windows 7 runs quite cool at around temperature of 40°C to 44°C.

Title:
acpi-support 0.121 causes ~+10c increase in HD temp.
Status in “acpi-support” package in Ubuntu:
Triaged
Bug description:
Binary package hint: acpi-support
Acpi-support 0.121 causes ~+10c increase in HD temp. Downgraded to
acpi-support 0.114 and the problem went away, HD temp normal, but
excessive load cycle occurs with that version. I've repeated the
process of using 0.121 and downgrading to 0.114 several times and the
results are the same.
