You didn't actually give me the command output I asked for, but your
output makes it quite clear that there is no $XDG_SESSION_ID. This
sounds a lot like bug 1244463, can you please give me the output of
"grep systemd /etc/pam.d/common-session"? If pam_systemd is missing,
then it's that bug. Thanks!

  [udev] device ACLs not working

Status in “systemd” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  The default device permissions/groups on upgrade made sound, camera,
  and scanner devices unavailable for non-privelaged users.

  In order to fix sound, I had to add myself to the audio group.

  Camera devices are defaulting to root:root ownership.

  Scanner device has root:lp ownership.

  Either way, permissions on upgrade are too restrictive for desktop
  use.
