Public bug reported:

session optional pam_systemd.so missing from /etc/pam.d common-session
file

I updated from 12.04 to 13.10 version three days back. After this I
noticed,

1. the shutdown and restart options from the top right corner button did not work.
2. My user name was not being diplayed next to the top right corner button.

>From #ubuntu-bug irc chat a user helped me identify the issue.

We started from the /var/log/syslog showing "Oct 24 22:54:58 c490100005
gnome-session[1984]: WARNING: Unable to inhibit system:
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied: Operation not
permitted" when I tried doing a shutdown/restart.

Then we ran the following commands with the following results,

command: dbus-send --print-reply --system --dest=org.freedesktop.login1 /org/freedesktop/login1 org.freedesktop.login1.Manager.CanPowerOff
result: method return sender=:1.3 -> dest=:1.95 reply_serial=2
   string "challenge"

command: loginctl list-sessions
result: 0 sessions listed.

command: cat /etc/pam.d/common-session | grep systemd
result: returned nothing

So we added the line "session optional pam_systemd.so" to the
common-session file and the above two issues are now gone.
