I ran into this when I had my Garmin navigator connected over USB, with
its internal and external storages automatically mounted. At some stage
os-prober executes "blkid -o value -s TYPE /dev/sde1" (as root) which
gets stuck. It was probing the navigator's external SDcard storage that
apparently wasn't accessible anymore even if it was still mounted.

Thanks Laurent for your workaround, it helped me.

Title:
Setting up memtest86+ (4.20-1.1ubuntu1) hangs indefinitely while
  generating grub.cfg

Status in “memtest86+” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Occurred while upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04 beta 2

  lsb_release -rd
  Description:	Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
  Release:	12.04

  apt-cache policy memtest86+
  memtest86+:
    Installed: 4.20-1.1ubuntu1
    Candidate: 4.20-1.1ubuntu1
    Version table:

          500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise/main amd64 Packages
          100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

During the installing new packages step, terminal became stuck at
configuring memtest86+, I broke out of it with ctrl+c and the setup
continued, but with ubuntu-standard subsequently failing due to the
  missing dependency.

I mounted and installed the missing packages ignoring the dependency
using the 12.04 Live CD and the system booted and was functional
correctly, apart from update manager doesn't work complaining that I
need to perform a partial upgrade instead.

When I attempt to sudo dpkg --configure -a as recommended by the error
dialog I am presented with the following behaviour.

  Terminal output:

  Setting up memtest86+ (4.20-1.1ubuntu1) ...
  Generating grub.cfg ...

  done

at which point it hangs indefinitely and if I break it (ctrl+c) the
  following:

  ^Cdpkg: error processing memtest86+ (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script was interrupted
  Errors were encountered while processing:
   memtest86+

The fact that this package is unconfigured is preventing me from using
update manager since ubuntu-standard has it as a dependency.
