Public bug reported:
Fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
First time I boot it.
Update Manager automatically pops up and shows there are 131 updates available.
I click "Install updates".
Then I am presented with this ridiculous error message: "Requires installation of untrusted packages". So what?
The only available option is "Close". Then I'm back at Update Manager where the 131 available updates are listed.
What is that supposed to mean? What am I supposed to do?
If something is wrong with those updates, then why is the system proposing them in the first place?
Some options should be given so as to solve the supposed issue.
It is impossible to install the updates, because if you click on "Install updates" again, it will give the same error again.
If you unfold the "Details" triangle, a (pretty long) list of packages is shown. It is not clear whether these are the packages whose installation would require the installation of untrusted stuff, or if this is the untrusted stuff that is required, in which case we don't know what updates are requiring this.
It's hard to figure out which updates one may uncheck in order to bypass this stall situation. Also, how is that supposed to solve the problem?
Some information that makes sense should be given to the user, and
options should be given such as "install untrusted packages" or "skip
installation of packages that require untrusted packages" (in which
case, in turn, there should be two options: ask me later, or never ask
to install these updates again).
Do you realise how nonsense the situation is?
The system is telling me: "these updates that I (the system) have decided on my own initiative to propose you, without you ever asking, cannot be installed because it would require to install something else that I don't want to install."
