looks like it was a conflict with gnome and/or other unneeded packages which i have removed and the install is continueing
removed gnome and unity packages as well as any residual config files of uninstalled packages

  When upgrading, the updater says there is a dependency issue, but the
  updater does not specify what the conflict is, therefore I am not able
  to easily resolve the issue myself
