I managed to install afterwards and may have an idea why it crashed.
I decided to encrypt my disk this time as part of the fresh install. I
prefer to have a separate partition for my /home. But, as this was my
first journey into the world of encryption, I was pretty much fumbling
around in the dark.
I manually created 2 encrypted partitions (one for / and one for /home)
via the Disks tool and used these for install (as I usually do with
unencrypted partitions). And then it failed as reported. Twice. Then I
gave up, used the built in encryption in the installer (i.e. letting the
installer decide what partitions I need). Doing this, everything worked
just fine.
After install, looking at the partition layout that the installer
created, I see a small, unencrypted partition for /boot. This is
probably what caused this crash: Nowhere outside encryption to put
/boot.
