This isn't a bug and grep does not "fail" if there is a broken symlink;
it just says there's no such file and moves on.

  Binary package hint: libblkid1

  the symlink

  lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  15 2010-02-21 13:24 blkid.tab ->
  /dev/.blkid.tab

  is created before /dev/.blkid.tab

  If you run grep /etc/* before blkid has been run grep fails
