Title:
Can never mount flash disks (Intrepid)

Status in “util-linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: util-linux

The USB flash disk has 128MB of storage and is formatted as FAT. It
mounted fine with Feisty and Gutsy (mounted disk appeared on desktop),
but broke with Hardy. I'm now running Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid) Server
  AMD64 and it remains broken.

  uname -a returns:
  Linux CERTIBY-DEV1 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Tue Nov 4 19:33:06 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux

When I insert the USB Flash Disk, the following appears in
  /var/log/messages:

  Nov 7 18:20:35 CERTIBY-DEV1 kernel: [ 8010.624032] usb 2-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 7

An unmounted 'USB Memory' disk icon appears in the computer:///
folder. However, nothing happens when I try to mount it, and no new
  lines appear in /var/log/messages.

The contents of /var/log/syslog (when I tried plugging in the USB
flash disk a second time) were:

Once again, the disk could not be mounted, and no new messages
  appeared in syslog.
