You are not using the official software but a copy from 2004 where the working
DVD support was ripped off and replaced by some thing half baken. I recommend to
upgrade to recent original software from:

 ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/alpha/

Title:
  wodim fails to burn DVD+RDL

Status in “cdrkit” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I use K3B to burn DVD's for longer than I care to think about. I
just upgraded to 11.10 with kernel 3.0. All dual layer burns have
failed since the upgrade. I have been able to complete a dual layer
burn properly by booting the prior 2.6.38 kernel from 11.04. Below is
the tail end of the log report from k3b using wodim 1.1.11. I was
able to burn a single layer DVD normally with kernel 3.0.0, but it
might use another program to burn with.

  Track 01: 7294 of 7297 MB written (fifo 100%) [buf 99%] 4.3x.
  Track 01: 7295 of 7297 MB written (fifo 100%) [buf 99%] 4.1x.
  Track 01: 7296 of 7297 MB written (fifo 100%) [buf 99%] 4.3x.
  Track 01: 7297 of 7297 MB written (fifo 100%) [buf 99%] 4.1x.
  Track 01: Total bytes read/written: 7652487168/7652487168 (3736566 sectors).
  Writing time: 1442.171s
  Average write speed 3.9x.
Min drive buffer fill was 1%
Total of 1 possible drive buffer underruns predicted.
  Fixating...
  Errno: 5 (Input/output error), close track/session scsi sendcmd: cmd timeout after 69.899 (1000) s
  CDB: 5B 00 04 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
cmd finished after 69.899s timeout 1000s
/usr/bin/wodim: No such device or address. Cannot send SCSI cmd via ioctl
  cdrecord command:
  -----------------------
  /usr/bin/wodim -v gracetime=2 dev=/dev/sr1 speed=4 -sao driveropts=burnfree -data -tsize=3736566s -

On all of the failures since my upgrade to 11.10, this error has been the same as above.

/usr/bin/wodim: No such device or address. Cannot send SCSI cmd via
  ioctl

Now that is unusual since it just completed burning almost 8 GBytes of
  information also indicated above.

Something unusual with this problem is that a single DVD burned and
completed normally. Unfortunately I did not view the report to see if
it used wodim or other package to burn with.

The program wodim 1.1.11 is over a year old so I do not suspect that
is where the problem, unless there was a change in the version 3
kernel that would effect it. It could be a compile issue of the
  version 3 kernel as well.

Thank you for the assistance. For now I will just boot the 2.6.38 kernel.
  James
