  Today I was investigating the sluggishness of my new Ubuntu Karmic
  install (on an EeePC 1005HAB), and happened on the idea that
  ureadahead might be slowing down my boot time. My boot time was over
  50 seconds to start with; once I disabled ureadahead (by commenting
  out the exec lines in the relevant files in /etc/init), boot time
  dropped to about 30 seconds, comparable to Windows XP, and
  applications launched perceptibly faster.

  It appears from further reading that, while these readahead mechanisms
  are useful on SSDs, they create enough overhead on normal hard disks
  to compromise performance noticably - even ureadahead, which is
  supposed to be friendlier to normal HDs. Since SSDs are still fairly
  rare, even in netbooks, I would therefore suggest that ureadahead be
  disabled by default to improve performance.
