I have similar problems, but not during install, it's more afterwards,
the symptoms are even worse. I'm using XFCE and these are the log-
entries, after X (!) crashes:

kernel: [55619.073637] xfce4-session[15151]: segfault at
ffffffff00000000 ip 00007f19da661f7f sp 00007fff251d30f0 error 5 in
libglib-2.0.so.0.3600.0[7f19da5fe000+f9000]

kernel: [55620.695548] xfce4-panel[15177]: segfault at 11 ip
00007fb1d776b2bd sp 00007fffe1446de0 error 6 in
libc-2.17.so[7fb1d76ea000+1be000]

Those problems seems to be in the i386-stuff, of course I can uninstall
all of this stuff, but you know I need a lot of it.

BTW, a simple firefox-start is enough to let my X crash.

Title:
Upgrade i386 12.10 to 13.04 fails segfaulting in libc 2.17 breaking
  system

Status in “ubuntu-release-upgrader” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I upgraded using console do-release-upgrade on i386 (Intel Pentium 4 HT with 64bit support) from 12.10 to 13.04.
After installing a couple of packets during upgrade including libc, all subproccesses startet to segfault in libc-2.17.so , so upgrade abortet though the system was in an unusable state.

Booting into initramfs gives me a console but chroot /root bash fails
with a double free error and chroot ... dpkg as well as other tools
  still fail with libc segfault.

I could not find any information about raised hardware requirements but would have expected do-release-upgrade to check for them if applicable.
