Sounds like a buggy bios. Can you attach the output of the boot info
script from sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript, as well as try the
super grub disk and run ls -l from the grub prompt?

Disk read error, when select win7 from grub menu
Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Dual-boot Win7 / Ubuntu 11.10.
- 11.10's os-prober detects both systems.
- Standard install of GRUB2 leads to "Grub rescue, out of of disk" error.
- GRUB2 install with --disk-module=ata shows the GRUB menu, Ubuntu boots fine, but choosing the Win7 entry leads to "Disk read error".
