Hi Brian,

I continued to look for ways to complete your suggestion, and found that
if I installed ppa-purge and ran the following terminal command, I was
able to restore the right libraries:

sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers

After that the distribution upgrade worked well.

   * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
   * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
