Public bug reported:

After a Windows install, I ran in to boot problems and tried running
boot-repair. That's when I first encountered this error. That has been
previously reported in Bug #1175018 (and one other bug, I think).

However, after running boot-repair, I was able to boot the linux install on my hard drive. (It wasn't quite the same as before; there was no splash screen.) However, I'm stilling having the error. For example:
----------------------------

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
2 not fully installed or removed.
After this operation, 0 B of additional disk space will be used.
