I've been getting this for a while as well. I've still been able to
install updates like Adam, but always get the error message. I wonder if
I'm getting all the updates I'm supposed to?

Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Software Updater
  After you get the above lovely message, the wrong move is to press "Try Again".
  Should you try "OK", then one of two things happens:
  Either you see the updates list, or you get a "The software on this computer is up to date".
  It is obvious that despite the message, repository information has been downloaded.
  As long as you stay away from "try again"!
