I have a small amount of further information which may be of assistance;
I have accessed my Yahoo e-mail account viaFirefox running on another
computer running on Microsoft Vista. That seems to be stable, and I am
replying to the bug report e-mail on that computer.
It seems as if Yahoo is constantly polling the server to see whether
there is new e-mail in the in-box. I don't think there's a problem with
the M key (which is the keyboard short-cut to check for new mail)
I have tried the Help page on Yahoo without sucess - and I cannot find any "settings" button to check
