To be honest, I can't anymore, though I could before :)
It appears to have been fixed, or whatever was missing was repaired by
running apt-get update and upgrade in terminal. Update manager is
working ok.

manager will cause update-manager to appear rolled up. There is no way
to roll it back down or do anything else besides killing the process.
