It has unfortunately taken most of my evening, getting to the source of
this problem.

Now got to follow instructions to remove discarded kernel images, I
doubt I will be getting out to play tonight.

Here's the kernel images Xubuntu has put in my /boot partition:

ii linux-image-3.5.0-28-generic 3.5.0-28.48 amd64 Linux kernel image for version 3.5.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP
ii linux-image-3.8.0-21-generic 3.8.0-21.32 amd64 Linux kernel image for version 3.8.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP
ii linux-image-3.8.0-22-generic 3.8.0-22.33 amd64 Linux kernel image for version 3.8.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP
ii linux-image-3.8.0-23-generic 3.8.0-23.34 amd64 Linux kernel image for version 3.8.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP
ii linux-image-3.8.0-25-generic 3.8.0-25.37 amd64 Linux kernel image for version 3.8.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP
ii linux-image-extra-3.5.0-28-generic 3.5.0-28.48 amd64 Linux kernel image for version 3.5.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP
ii linux-image-extra-3.8.0-21-generic 3.8.0-21.32 amd64 Linux kernel image for version 3.8.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP
ii linux-image-extra-3.8.0-22-generic 3.8.0-22.33 amd64 Linux kernel image for version 3.8.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP
ii linux-image-extra-3.8.0-23-generic 3.8.0-23.34 amd64 Linux kernel image for version 3.8.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP

This is a real headache for a numpty user like me. Like, wtf?

It transpires that my machine is using: 3.8.0-25-generic

To confuse matters, the kernel images include apparently more recent
images: 3.5.0-28-generic ..

So if I delete the '-28' images, will it cause a problem? < This is a
rhetorical question. I'm not here for support. I'm here on my hands and
knees begging that this error be taken seriously. It keeps recurring.
One of these days I'm going to delete the wrong kernel image and it'll
all go up the swanny. I am not a computer administrator. I am a *user*.
Should even a computer administrator have to undertake this pointless
janitorial exercise every few weeks?
