trying to start rsyslogd manually  on my machine produces the following
output:

Bug description:
  This was during an upgrade from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04 using Update
  Manager. The installation of 12.04 hung at this part of the
  installation process for well over an hour. Installation was aborted.
