Title:
BCM4312 does not require Broadcom STA driver anymore
Status in “ubuntu-drivers-common” package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
As of Linux version 2.6.33 support for the BCM4312 wireless card has
been added to the b43 kernel module. There for the proprietary bcmwl
wireless driver is not required anymore. Instead one can use the
"firmware-b43-lpphy-installer" to install the required firmware files.
Afterwards the wireless card can be used using the open source b43
driver!
Since the bcmwl module was causing kernel panics every now and then
(at least on my machine), I strongly suggest to add this option to the
software-properties dialog (and adding "firmware-b43-lpphy-installer"
package to restricted?) as the recommended way of using this chipset
(offering bcmwl only as a fallback).
