Make sense.

But you'd request upstream instead.

Title:
warn about GREP_OPTIONS in the man page

Status in “grep” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: grep

the many bug reports we have about problems caused by GREP_OPTIONS
justifies a warning in the man page.

i'm thinking of something along these lines:
  ----
  GREP_OPTIONS
This variable specifies default options to be placed in front of any explicit options. For example, ...
WARNING: setting this variable will most likely cause (system) scripts to break in a strange and obscure way. it is better to use an alias (see man bash) instead.
  ----

  related: bug #67141

see following bug reports for problems caused by GREP_OPTIONS
  bug #75031
  bug #257984
  bug #398393
  bug #540733
