  disappointing installation crash

Bug description:
  btw, last release 12.10 also had problems on this machine. 12.10
  installed ok but frequently crashed. screen would freeze, mouse
  pointer still mobile. lununtu 12.10 and ubuntu studio 12.10 were fine
