wodim does that for me too. Try this (substitute your drive name for
sr0)

wodim dev=/dev/sr0 -checkdrive

If it works, you can set cdrom=     /dev/sr0 in /etc/wodim.conf

  Cannot open SCSI driver!

  the wodim documentation.
