For me, at each 30th reboot or so, the screen stays completely blannk,
but pressing "C" (as I remember from other machines or older versions)
will get me to the desktop - so I suppose a disk check was running while
there was this blank screen...

Title:
"Check disk for defects" shows black screen

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I made a persistent live USB key from
  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/20100416/lucid-desktop-
  amd64.iso (md5sum 3457aff4863972bbb38806e68cd30a77), booted my
computer from it, and selected "Check disk for defects". The screen
went black and nothing else happened AFAICT.

The root cause is probably the video problem discussed in bug
  #557744.

However, "Check disk for defects" isn't optimally useful if it is
affected by video problems. Shouldn't it run in some incredibly safe
  video mode?
