Title:
Can't install (L)Ubuntu 13.04 on 64-bit UEFI-enabled system alongside
Windows 8 (grub-efi failed to install)
Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
I can't install Lubuntu or Ubuntu 13.04 in a new UEFI-enabled laptop.
I want to install Lubuntu alongside Windows 8, which came installed in the Laptop. I tested whenever UEFI was enabled in Windows and it is. The Live CD boots normally in UEFI mode (followed the instructions in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI , UEFI is enabled in the Live CD too).
First of all, the Live CD doesn't has the "Install alongside Windows" option. The only options I had were to erase Windows or go to the advanced configurations. In the advanced configurations and in GParted, all the Windows partitions were shown (with correct size and label), so it looks like it can read the GPT without problems.
I decided to resize the Windows partition and install Lubuntu manually. Inside Windows, there were two small partitions at the beginning of the disk (300 MB and 100 MB), one huge Windows partition and a recovery image at the end (almost 20 GB). I reduced the huge partition, rebooted with the Lubuntu Live CD, created one /boot partition (250 MiB, ext2), one swap partition (4 GiB) and an Ext4 partition ("/", rest of the disk). I chose to install the bootloader at the partition tagged as EFI and installed Lubuntu. The install stopped at some point with the message "'grub-efi' package failed to install into /target/. Without the GRUB boot loader, the installed system will not boot". The terminal had no interesting messages (only the usual logs from apt, saying that it is installing grub-efi).
Tried to download latest version (apt-get update && apt-get install grub-efi grub-efi-amd64 grub-efi-amd64-bin) and it didn't work. Then, I connected to the internet and chose to download new packages. It downloads and installs new packages, but fails with the same error.
The new partition isn't bootable. The Windows partition wasn't damaged.
Since I couldn't install Lubuntu, I downloaded the Ubuntu iso today and it had the same problems. Both were booted from disks (CD-R and DVD-R) instead of USB-sticks. The Lubuntu image is from the day before yesterday, both had the checksums tested.
