Public bug reported:

I am entirely new to Ubuntu and have installed release 12.04.1 LTS on a
new uniform attend drive in a Dell D610 laptop. I set the following
partitions: /boot - 100MB, Swap area - 3072MB, /home - the rest of the
320GB drive less 20 GB & / - 20 GB. No other operating system is
present.

Initially, no GRUB screen showed at startup but the following error messages showed:
Error: No such device
Error: No such partition
Error: No suitable mode found
Error: No video mode activated
After about 45 secs Ubuntu loaded.

I ran the Boot Repair Disk after which the GRUB screen shows at startup.
Now the error messages only show if GRUB-TIMEOUT is set to 0. I have not
left it at zero.

I reported the issue via the Boot Repair Disk system and was advised to
submit this bug report.

Please can you tell me why I get the error messages and how I might
repair the system?

Thank you

Adrian
