I'm pretty sure this is a bug, or at least poor design.

I just got a new Dell Inspiron 660 with Windows 8, I wanted to dual-boot
with ubuntu. I shored up some space for a partition and created a
partition in the Ubuntu 12.10 32-bit installer (note that the installer
didn't identify Windows as being there, so I used the 'something else'
option). Ubuntu was working fine, but the dual-boot aspect wasn't
working properly. I ran boot-repair - it told me that I needed to
install the 64-bit version for things to work properly.

So I went back into Windows, downloaded 12.10 64-bit and went ahead with
the reinstall. This time, instead of 'something else' I chose 'Reinstall
Ubuntu ...'. After the install, I tried to reboot into Windows and soon
found that it wasn't there anymore (fdisk -l shows only the linux
partition). No big deal for me since it is a new machine and I didn't
lose any data, but the reinstall option apparently (or at least in my
case) recognise that the previous install was isolated to a specific
partition. There should at least be a warning like there is for the top
option (which I forget at this moment).
