Hij Brian,
I tried the standard xubuntu startup disk creator (KDE?). I fries formatting the USB drive also. But it didn't help. Using unetbootin did the job in the end. That was yesterday.

Bug description:
  having trouble installing any version of ubuntu or debian seems to be
  wifi ath9k problem. had installed lubuntu without troubles but was
  time for new install. xubuntu 12.04 installer crashes close to the end
  of the install.
