Same here for Ubuntu LTS 12.04 (updated), i686, grub-pc, AMD Radeon X850
XT graphics card. Monitor is a VGA-connected BenQ FP202W that never
caused any trouble with typical resolutions like 640x480, 800x600 etc.

Workaround: Tell grub to stick to ascii terminal instead of graphics
mode (uncomment "GRUB_TERMINAL=console" in /etc/default/grub )

Title:
Grub gives graphics card invalid data

Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: grub-pc

When I boot to my Ubuntu hard drive, (NOT PARTITION, A SEPARATE DRIVE), Grub loads and my monitor, as well as a few other monitors I tested, give a "Frequency out of range" error. I am using an un-overclocked Nvidia GeForce 6500.
I expexted a grub menu, but I am doing 'blind' manipulations in GRUB.
I am using Ubuntu Natty Beta 2
The monitor issue remains until the logon screen, where I get native resolution of 1440x900.
