The problem seems to have gone away! Now, as before, I was running
'bundle --help' in xfce-terminal. I have also tried at the console, but
I cannot reproduce it any more in either environment.

At the time I was also experiencing lots of strange freeze-ups in which
applications and console sessions would not launch and the GUI would
misbehave and I would have to force a shutdown from the power button. I
believe this misbehaviour was connected to a backup was doing to an NTFS
volume. I wonder if this might be related?

Title:
  Sometimes 'q' doesn't work to quit less

Status in “less” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Sometimes I am using less and I press 'q' to quit, but it just won't
  quit. Most recently this has happened after I ran the help for the
  Ruby bundler:

  $ bundle --help

  I tried numerous times to press 'q'. I tried other commands such as
  '/' and they worked OK. Then I tried 'q' again without success and had
  to kill the process from outside.
