You appear to be installing on a fake raid. You must chose to install
grub to the whole raid device ( /Dev/mapper ) rather than an individual
disk ( /dev/sda  ).

** Changed in: grub-installer (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Invalid

Title:
  grub install failed

Status in “grub-installer” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Installing fresh on an Alienware Area-51 m9700.
  Had a crash and reboot loop during booting into the installer (12.04 LTS) that I got around by useing nouveu.modeset=0. Managed to continued through install until the grub-install runs.

  Using all default partition install settings I don't seem to have an
  sda and grub throws an error, refuses to install, and causes the whole
  install to fail.
