Oh my, that was like 5 years ago :)
I still have that laptop although I did upgrade twice since then, and I also switched back from Ubuntu to Debian for a long list of reasons.
I wonder how this bug wasn't killed by the "eh, we never replied to your bug, but it's been long enough that the distribution you used is now obsolete, so we're closing it" bug auto-closer bot.
Either way, if you work for canonical or volunteer for ubuntu, feel free
to close as wontfix since hardy is now very obsolete.

Title:
acpid eventually stops getting acpi events on hardy
Status in “acpid” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Binary package hint: acpid
This started happening after I upgraded my laptop to
1.0.4-5ubuntu9/hardy, it was working on the prior release I had.
Problem is that acpid randomly stops getting acpi events from the
laptop. What happens is that eventually I would close my lid, and the
laptop would not go to sleep. After I re-opened the lid, if I
restarted apcid, then it would go to sleep as many times as it missed
lid events.
I have currently successfully worked around the problem with:
1 * * * * root find /var/log -mmin -240 -name acpid | grep -q acpid || /etc/init.d/acpid restart
The problem is somewhat serious since the laptop not going to sleep
when the lid is closed and thrown in a backpack not only kills the
battery, but can also severely heat up the laptop depending on what
thermal protection it has.
If I can gather some info on the stuck acpid before I restart it, let
me know.
