Glancing at .xsession-errors, i have that error logged:
(gnome-shell:3610): Clutter-CRITICAL **: clutter_actor_get_accessible: assertion `CLUTTER_IS_ACTOR (self)' failed
note: libclutter-1.0-0 1.14.0-0ubuntu1~raring1 , but seems not having
relationship with gparted.

Title:
Endlessly scan without finding the partitions
Status in “gparted” package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
Raring i386 + gnome3-team ppa , logged with gnome-shell
I've tried to format an usb key by right-clicking on the usb support
(mounted as sdc) inside nautilus, filled the required formatting
settings, but that stick is only unmounted without beeing formated.
For the second try, i start gparted from the dash, but get again an
other issue: gparted interface open and start scanning about devices &
partitions, but cant find one. Then i start gparted from the terminal,
the interface is again opened and the endless scanning goes on. Inside
the terminal, i only get "libparted 2.3" as a comment, nothing else.
So i suppose gparted need to be upgraded to work with gnome 3.8 , as
none of the several hdds partitions nor the usb stick are found.
note: raring's gparted is quite old: the latest stable is now 0.14.1-6 (since a few months)
