This could be related to bug #1120938. I'm still experimenting with the
issue to see if I can find any more information.

  boots up, asks various questions, downloads various components, says
  "starting up the partitioner", accesses discs for a couple seconds,
  screen goes blank purple, and it hangs thus.  same on either my laptop
  or my desktop.
