This is not a duplicate 1161243. I am reporting that update manager has
no way to be cancelled when an update fails. I am not reporting the
specific update failure. It's happened again today in a different way.

   package linux-image-3.8.0-15-generic (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 128

Bug description:
  During todays update of the kernel, update manager just stopped. I
  have no way to cancel the update because cancel is greyed out, and
  there's no close button. See screenshot..
