Title:
Fails to boot when /boot/grub/default is not found

Status in “grub” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Don't ask me why the 'default' file got removed, but for some reason
the 'savedefault' part of my menu.lst stopped working today. The boot
stopped with 'Error 15: File not found' from grub.

Removing the 'savedefault' or re-creating the 'default' file fixes
this, but I think a bootloader should be more resilient against
breakages like this, and just warn instead of die.
