It looks like you have Intel Matrix / Intel Rapid storage.
Did you create separate /boot outside of Raid storage ? grub, as far as I know, cannot be installed into Intel Rapid Storage.

If you don't want any RAID setup then at boot press Esc, and modify the
boot options to include

nodmraid

then intel rapid storage will not be activated and your install may be
more successful.

Title:
grub-install fails on HP Envy 17 - crashes entire install

Status in “grub-installer” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Installation Failure on HP Envy 17. Full wipe and clean install.

  Version:

  Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS "Precise Pangolin"

  Expected To Happen:

  Installation would complete successfully.

  What Happened Instead:

Installation failed on grub bootloader install. Says that grub cannot
  install to the specified directory.

After grub installation fails, a popup box appears with various
  alternative installation locations like /boot/RAID-0-xxxxx

The dropdown box allows you to select an option, but it is impossible
to hit OK so you can never get past this step.
